What We're About
The Bakhita Girls project aims to build a secondary school for 240 girls in Ifakara, Tanzania. The school will specifically target girls who come from underprivileged backgrounds, and who are therefore more likely to be victims of rape, abuse, and AIDS. Underprivileged, uneducated girls everywhere are also at risk of being exploited socially and sexually. This school will also provide education to young mothers, and will have an affiliated Kindergarten. The school will not however be available only to the impoverished. Girls from diverse socio-economic backgrounds will be enrolled. We hope to create an environment and curriculum in which young women of all social classes can flourish.
Sustainable Education
In order to ensure that the education of 240 girls will not in the long run, depend upon charity, we plan to establish a non-profit cocoa bean company alongside the school, which will serve the dual purpose of providing jobs for locals as well as raising money to independently finance the school. This venture will prevent the school from becoming just another “charity school” in the continent, and will establish it as an exemplary model of a sustainable education, integrated within its host community. The jobs that the cocoa bean company will provide will impact the whole community.
